Tap water…oddly enough is both critical for life, but also very destructive to your pipes, fixtures and plumbing overall!
Tap Water and Its Stigma
Although water is critical for life it is also the most destructive force in nature. Water softeners are a great piece of technology to protect your homes’ appliances, pipes, equipment, and fixtures water utilizing appliances, pipes, and fixtures from hard water minerals found in most water supplies. Water softeners can have some drawbacks as well since they typically use ion exchange to remove the hard water minerals from the water, thus changing the molecular formation of the water itself. This can cause the water to have a “slimy” feel to it.
Water softeners can help prevent your water fixtures and equipment (i.e., shower heads, sink faucets, etc.) from forming hard water deposits thus extending the life but it can come at a cost. Common expenses include refilling the salt every month electricity (minimal) and wastewater from the water softening process.
Astute homeowners will explore other effective ways to combat hard water minerals so that they protect the pipes and fixtures in their home without changing the molecular integrity of the water. The most effective solution combines powerful filtration with polyphosphates. Polyphosphates have been used in the commercial world to protect equipment for over 60 years but can only be used with a cartridge-based system.
