What Is Ultrafiltration in Water Filtration?

The physical filtration technology that removes bacteria, viruses, and cysts before water reaches your tap.

Ultrafiltration (UF) is a water filtration method that uses a hollow fiber membrane to remove contaminants in the 0.01 to 0.1 micron (µm) range, including bacteria, most viruses, and cysts. As homeowners look for water filter systems that go beyond taste and odor improvement, this technology is increasingly showing up as the standard for whole-home protection.

Most people assume the water leaving a treatment plant is the same water coming out of their tap. It isn’t. Between those two points, water travels through miles of aging infrastructure where various types of contamination can occur. When it comes to mechanical contamination like bacteria, virus, cyst and other sediments, this is the problem ultrafiltration is ultimately designed to solve. 

How Ultrafiltration Works

Ultrafiltration systems use a hollow fiber membrane made up of  small tubes with pores fine enough to physically block particles at that scale. Water flows through the membrane, trapping contaminants on the interior of the fibers. Periodically, an ultrafiltration system runs a brief self-cleaning cycle, keeping the membrane clear without the need for constant maintenance.

This is a meaningfully smaller filtration threshold than what most traditional whole-house filters offer. Many standard whole-house systems operate around 25 – 50 microns , which is enough to catch visible sediment like sand or dirt. But when it comes to what you can’t see or taste, microscopic organisms like fine sediment, bacteria, viruses, or cysts can pass right through.

  • Viruses: 0.02 to 0.5 µm

This also ensures that 100% of the water which enters the filter is actually treated, as opposed to granular which permits channeling, allowing untreated water to pass through the system.  

Together, the two stages cover what neither one can handle alone: ultrafiltration stops what you can’t see, and block carbon takes care of what you can taste and smell.
